Precision Machined DNA Sequencing Enclosure – Oxford University Spin-Out
Universal Fabrications worked with a spin-out company from Oxford University to prototype a precision machined aluminium enclosure for a DNA sequencing machine. The device is used to identify variants in the genetic makeup of humans, animals and plants. With over 45 years’ experience in precision machining and complex metal fabrication, we were able to support a high-tech client at the critical prototype stage.
The Challenge
Prototype enclosures for scientific instruments leave little room for error. The enclosure had to house sensitive sequencing technology, with accurate features and a high-quality finish, while the design was still being developed. As a prototype, it also needed a manufacturing partner able to work flexibly and respond quickly as the client refined its product.
Universal Fabrications’ Role
We precision machined the enclosure from aluminium using our in-house 3, 4 and 5-axis CNC milling capability at our Nuneaton facility, working to the client’s design and quality requirements under our ISO 9001 quality system. The finished enclosures were sulphuric acid anodised to BS EN ISO 7599 giving a hard-wearing, corrosion-resistant and electrically insulating surface with a consistent, high-quality appearance suited to laboratory use. Because anodising adds thickness to every surface, the allowance was factored in at the machining stage to every critical dimension to ensure they stayed within tolerance after finishing.
Why It Mattered
The device went on to track Covid-19 variants around the world, and has since been applied to monitoring wider respiratory infections and tackling drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis – work featured in The Guardian in October 2022. For the client, it meant a precision machining partner able to deliver quality prototype parts at an important stage of development.
