Gas Strut Assisted Automotive Lifting Solution

OVERVIEW

Universal Fabrications developed an automotive lifting solution built around a gas strut to assist with lifting the load. The result is an easy-to-carry, easy-to-use system made from sheet metal components and TIG welded together. With over 45 years’ experience manufacturing complex metal fabrications for the automotive, specialist vehicle and defence sectors, we understand how to balance strength, weight and usability.

The Challenge

Rolls Royce wanted a Hood Prop lifting aid to take real loads safely while remaining light and compact enough to be carried and used by one person. It also needs to be simple and intuitive to operate, and robust enough for day-to-day use in a workshop or production environment.

Universal Fabrications’ Role

A gas strut was chosen to assist with lifting the load, then built into a compact frame made from sheet metal components produced in-house using our laser cutting and press brake capability. The components were TIG welded for precise, clean joints, with all work carried out under our ISO 9001 and BS EN ISO 3834-2 welding capabilities.

Why It Mattered

The finished system reduced the effort needed to lift the load, while remaining easy to carry and use. Using sheet metal rather than heavier construction kept weight down without compromising strength. It’s the same practical approach we bring to all our automotive work: engineering that makes the job easier for the people using it.
