5-Axis Machined Differential Casing for a Special Vehicle
Universal Fabrications was asked to machine a two-piece differential casing from solid aluminium, working from the customer’s 3D model. With tight time constraints and very tight tolerances, this was a job tailor-made for one of our lead engineers. With over 45 years’ experience in precision machining and complex fabrication for the automotive, specialist vehicle and defence sectors, we delivered on both quality and time.
The Challenge
A differential casing has to hold precise alignment between its two halves and the components inside, so tolerances were very tight. Machining both parts from solid 6082-T6 aluminium meant removing large amounts of material while keeping every critical feature accurate. And the deadline left little room for error.
Universal Fabrications’ Role
Working directly from the customer’s 3D model, our senior machinist produced the two parts using two of our 5-axis machining centres at our Nuneaton facility. Running two machines in parallel helped us meet the deadline, whilst the 5-axis machining allowed complex features to be produced in fewer set-ups, supporting accuracy. All work was carried out under our ISO 9001 quality system supported by BS EN ISO 9606-2 coded TIG welders, underpinned by our BS EN ISO 3834-2 welding capabilities.
Why It Mattered
The parts were completed on time and finished to an excellent quality. The customer was delighted, and we received fantastic feedback from their engineers doing the build. It’s the same approach we bring to all our precision machining: the right people and the right machines on the job, so critical parts arrive ready to fit.
